Gig Harbor-State Senator Derek Kilmer announced today he will run for re-election to the 26th District State Senate seat.
Kilmer was promptly endorsed by Congressman Norm Dicks who remarked, “Derek is a
problem-solving leader, focused on serving his community everyday. Derek is sharply focused on growing our economy and creating family wage jobs in our area. I strongly support his reelection campaign.”
Derek Kilmer was also endorsed in his 2010 re-election campaign by Gig Harbor Mayor
Chuck Hunter, Port Orchard Mayor Lary Coppola, and Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent and by
a majority of the City Councilmembers in all three cities he represents. In Gig Harbor,
Kilmer was endorsed by Councilmembers Paul Conan, Steve Ekberg, Paul Kadzik, Ken
Malich, Tim Payne, and Derek Young.
Kilmer’s re-election was also endorsed by Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist and by each of the firefighter locals in the area – including Gig Harbor Firefighters IAFF Local #3390, Key Peninsula Firefighters IAFF Local #3152, and the Tacoma Fire Fighters IAFF Local #31.
Senator Kilmer was first elected in 2004 to the State House of Representatives. In 2006, Derek Kilmer won his State Senate seat with 59% of the vote.
As a State Senator, Derek Kilmer has focused on creating jobs, protecting taxpayers,
strengthening our schools and honoring our veterans. Some of his accomplishments include:
• Improving infrastructure to ensure construction of a new hospital in Gig Harbor and
to revitalize downtown Bremerton
• Leading the charge to keep Narrows Bridge tolls down
• Securing funding for road safety improvements on SR 302
• Reducing personal property taxes for small businesses
• Creating new scholarships to help students pay for college
• Championing the effort to provide new programs in nursing and engineering for
students in our region
• Helping veteran-owned businesses get state contracts.
In the State Senate, Derek is a member of the Transportation Committee, the Economic Development, Trade, and Innovation Committee, and is the Chair of the Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee. Derek also serves on the Joint Committee on Military and Veterans’ Affairs, the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education’s Legislative Advisory Committee, and on the Board of the Washington State History Museum.
“We have more to do to get our region out of this recession. I’ve always believed the
turnaround happens by creating jobs – not raising taxes. I’ve worked to create jobs in the private sector and I’m ready to keep that as my focus as State Senator,” said Kilmer.
For his efforts, Kilmer has been named Legislative Leader of the Year three times by the Washington Economic Development Association and received the Business Star Award from Washington’s Business Institute.
When not in Olympia, Derek is an accomplished economic development leader. Serving as the Vice President for the Economic Development Board (EDB) for Tacoma-Pierce County, Derek has worked with hundreds of employers, focused on growing and keeping good, high wage jobs in our community.
Derek was born and raised on the Olympic Peninsula. Derek and his wife Jennifer, the
Executive Director of the Harbor History Museum, live in Gig Harbor with their two
daughters. Derek has been an active leader in the Gig Harbor community, serving as a board member of the Peninsula Schools Education Foundation, the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of Gig Harbor Rotary and of the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church.###
